Further Location Research

Sound
I have been to South Parks to research it and I think that if we were to film there then we may have an issue with sound. In South Parks there is usually a lot of people and it can get quite noisy, also this location is quite a popular place so there will definitely be difficulty with people getting in the way of the shot. Also I don’t think that South Parks really portrays the right atmosphere for a Film Noir and it gets incredibly windy up there which could easily ruin any sound we get using the microphone.
Lighting
The light in South Parks should be more than enough for our camera especially if it is a light day, the park is extremely spacious and trees are not an issue when it comes to blocking out light. However after going to the park to research it I feel that the location is far too busy for us to be able t film there.
Health and Safety
This area is definitely safe as it is just a big park. The only trouble we may have is the possibility of being robbed as the park has been known for it, but that is highly unlikely.

Power
There will be no way to recharge the equipment so we will have to make sure we are fully charged before we leave to film.

Casting research

Picking the right actors for the character roles in our production is very important in the success of the 5 minute film. The characters have to be believable and accurate to the conventional characters in such films as 'The Public Enemy', which is a crime based Noir Film with very strong main characters. I chose not to act in the film personally as i think as a director i can have more creative control. We had used actors we knew personally to act in our production, the fact that we knew them so well meant that communication between us was very fluent. Our 3 characters were played by Alex Bagenel, Joe Marinari and Leo Petrokofsky and choosing the specific characters for each actor wasn't particularly difficult. Joe Marinari is a natural actor and can play a wide variety of roles, however we thought he suited the role of the villain, mostly due to his dark hair and eyes which in the film gives off a very chilling effect. His strange sounding, unconventional voice also helped portray his dark characters persona.
Alex Bagenel plays the detective. His appearance is similar to the conventional detectives that are seen in films like Sherlock Homes and Charlie Chan, his voice also plays a huge part as he has a strong voice which is slightly posh which really gives his character a powerful edge.
Leo Petrokofsky plays the detective his is getting tortured in the opening scene, this character is also being portrayed as having a strong character and huge amounts of bravery, Leos size helps his character give off a powerful aura whilst showing little fear in the eyes of death.

Research into Film Noir Movies.

The brief states that i must make a short film lasting approximately 5 minutes. It also asked me to choose 2 out of the 3 ancillary tasks, i have chosen the poster and the radio trailer. I have been researching some popular noir classics of the 30/40/50's and these 12 films have extremely appealed to me and some especially through their film posters. Here is a list and i will be posting later with my analysis of some of my favourite films.

Film Noire costume research

Virtually any single element of Film Noire is seen as iconic. The first and strongest signals of noire characters have to be the way they are dressed. The iconic leading men of Film Noir were known as being brooding, hard drinking womanisers, they resort to quick wit rather than violence. To emulate these characters it would be a good idea to dress similarly to them as that with give the audience a clear first impression of who we are.

The classic style is the three piece suit, it allows the look good without attracting too much attention to himself. The jacket is usually unbuttoned to not only show off the vest below, but also to show off their pistol to make the other character feel uneasy but still not give a hostile impression to others not involved.

Since dark, uneasy weather was often used in Film Noir as a means of foreshadowing dark, mysterious, and dangerous situations, the detective often wore a large coat to add to the feeling of gloom surrounding the set. Often worn with the collar popped up to shield, or conceal one’s face. These have come back into style recently so acquiring one of these should not be too difficult.

A clever thing with Film Noire was the fact that you felt that the characters were stylish without even trying to be, like in such films as 'The Maltese Falcon' and 'The Big Sleep'.

Film Noire music soundtrack research

This song will give a very 'Noire like' aura and help add to the dark, moody scenes we will be filming. This being played at the same time as the track below will help add an even darker and spooky effect.
